From
The Field:
For its 30th anniversary, Berean
Baptist Church, Mansfield, Ohio, hosted Converge
Worldwide missionaries to Nigeria, Art and Dorothy
Helwig who have developed regional response to the
greatest pandemic of this generation in an entire
province of Nigeria. Both Art Helwig and Converge
president Jerry Sheveland spoke during the Sunday
morning worship service and celebration September
27.
Church members Paul and Dee Kelner composed
and produced a nine-song music CD titled African Visions
in honor of the Helwigs. Funds from sale of the CD will
support the Helwigs' GEECHAN (HIV/AIDs awareness,
prevention and care) ministry in Nigeria. Go to
www.jazzdoc007.com/music_and_more to sample the music
and order a copy of African Visions so you can help in a
very practical
manner. | |
For Your
Consideration:
Early in my pastoral ministry, I received a hand written
letter with no return address in which some dear "saint"
wanted to inform me that using the "common cup" for
Communion was perfectly acceptable because the elements
were "germicidal" so infections could not be spread
through contact.
Now, with the onset of H1N1 influenza, am I the only one
wondering about the spread of germs through the passing
of the elements during the Lord's Supper? Do churches
have a responsibility to go the extra mile to protect
attenders? And what might that solution look like?
Plastic gloves? Tongs? Bring Your Own
Elements?
One of the larger churches in our district has gone to
the use of the "Celebration Cup" during the winter
months. "Celebration Cup" offers the elements in a
self-contained unit with which only the user makes
contact. It's easy to use, speeds up preparation time
and provides a pro-active alternative that people might
appreciate this flu
season.
The only down side....you hear the papers crinkling as
the service
progresses.
Just a
thought... |
